Blossom Time Memories - Hana no Jikan no Omoide

My flowers this week are crab apple blossoms.
They remind me of a time at school when I was about 8yrs old and our teacher tried to teach us
(It was a bit of a thing in the 70s before people discovered macramé)
I remember feeling very confused about the concept of working with sparse foliage instead of the usual flower arranging, but Lo! when she started to explain we were trying to achieve three different levels and a representation to heaven and earth......

Can you imagine my little 8yr old face?
Looking back now I bless the wonderful teachers who try to bring different cultures and concepts to children and admire them for their thoughtfulness.
Though I may not have totally grasped it at the time, I'm sure it provided me with valuable foundation.
Similarly blossom time reminds me of Japanese classes when I was 13yrs old.
One of the first phrases we learnt was,
"Where are you going?"
"I am going to view cherry blossom"
Really?
At 13 and living in sunny un-blossom-ish QLD we found this concept a bit left of field.
Watashi-wa hanami ni ikimasu.
Aahh soo desu
Now I understand.
Standing amidst the blossom as the spring breeze blows tiny petals like snow flakes feels very much like attaining heaven on earth.

  1. Have you seen the movie "Lost in Translation?" When the main character tries her hand at Ikebana, but remains totally lost among others who are excelling, you can see the depth of her confusion/depression. All without a single English word spoken. So amazing. So stick-with-you-ish.
